If you don’t have any idea how to select a perfect WordPress theme and how to install it in your WordPress site, follow this tutorial step by step. Here, we are going to explain how to install both premium and free WordPress theme.
Before installing a WordPress theme
Before installing a WordPress theme, you need to choose a WordPress theme that you wish to install in your site. You may already have seen there are thousands of free and premium WordPress themes are available. As a beginner, it is a challenging task to pick up the right one. Of course, it is always possible to change your theme later. However, every time, before you pick up a theme, you need to be careful as the outlook of your site depends on the design of your theme. Besides, the design of your website, a WordPress theme also plays an essential role for many SEO factors.
Method-1: How to install WordPress theme via WP admin theme directory (Way to install free WordPress theme)
In the WordPress theme directory, you will only get available free themes. To install these free themes, follow the steps below.
Step-1: log-in to your WordPress dashboard. On the WordPress dashboard, go to ‘Appearance’ and click on ‘Themes’ on the left side menu.
Step-2: Once you will arrive under the ‘Themes’ section, you will find the list of themes which are already installed either by default or by you.
Now for installing a new theme, click on the ‘Add New’ button as you see in the picture below.
Step-3: When you will click on the ‘Add New’ button, you will arrive in the WordPress theme’s directory (follow the picture below). All the available themes in the WordPress theme library are entirely free.
To search the themes from the WordPress theme directory, you may filter the themes either by the popularity of the themes or by features you need for your site.
In the ‘Feature Filter’ section, you have to select website type or subject (like Blog, E-Commerce, Education, Entertainment, Food & Drink, Holiday, News, Photography, Portfolio etc.), features ( like Accessibility Ready, Custom Background, Custom Colors, Custom Header, Custom Logo etc.), and layout (like Grid Layout, One Column, Two Columns, Three Columns etc.) according to your requirements and click on the ‘Apply Filters’ button. It will give you a list of available themes with these specific features. From there, choose a theme you would like to install in your site.
Step-4: Once you select a theme, click on the ‘Install’ button as you see in the picture below. Wait for until the installation process is finished. After installation, an ‘Activate’ button will appear at the place of ‘Install’ button and then click on the ‘Activate’ button to activate the theme on your site.
Method-2: How to install a WordPress theme manually using the upload method from the WordPress dashboard (Way to install both premium & free WordPress theme)
Using method 1, you will be only able to install free WordPress themes which are only available in the WordPress theme directory. If you want to install a premium WordPress theme or a free theme which is not available in the WordPress theme directory, you need to install it manually using the upload method from the WordPress dashboard.
Step-1: First, you need to download a theme on your computer from the official website of the theme provider. To download the premium WordPress theme, you need to first sign-up, and then you have to make the payment.
Keep in mind that the format of the theme file should be in the ZIP format. If it is not in the ZIP format, you have to convert it to the ZIP format.
Step-2: Once you have a theme, log-in to your WordPress dashboard. On the WordPress dashboard, go to ‘Appearance’ and click on ‘Themes’ on the left side menu. Next, under the ‘Themes’ section, click on the ‘Add New’ button as you see in the picture below.
Step-3: When you will click on the ‘Add New’ button, you will arrive on the WordPress theme’s directory dashboard. Next, click on the ‘Upload Theme’ button at the top as you see in the picture below. Then, click on the ‘Choose File’ button and select the downloaded ZIP file of the theme that you want to install.
Wait for until the upload process is finished and then click on the ‘Install Now’ button next to ‘Choose File’ button.
After complete installation, you will get a successful message on your screen as you see in the picture below. To use the theme, click on the ‘Activate’ button on the screen.
Now, your job is done, you have successfully installed the theme for your site.
Things you need to do after installing a WordPress theme
- You have to customize the theme according to your’s need. To customize the theme, check first the theme documentation from the official website of the theme. If you find any difficulties, then contact with the customer support team of the theme.
- Another most important thing is that you have to update the theme when the new update comes to keep your theme compatible with the latest version of the WordPress.
